As paid customer acquisition costs continue to skyrocket across the digital landscape, e-commerce brands are frantically shifting their budgets toward owned channels and retention strategies. Capitalizing on this industry-wide pivot, StarApps—a fiercely independent, bootstrapped app developer within the Shopify ecosystem—has announced the acquisition of enterprise mobile app platform AppMaker in an all-cash deal.
This strategic acquisition is designed to bridge the gap between online product discovery and long-term customer loyalty, connecting StarApps’ massive merchant distribution network with the highest growth layer of mobile commerce.
Since its founding in 2016, StarApps has charted an impressive growth trajectory without ever relying on outside venture capital. The company has built a highly profitable software ecosystem, generating more than $6 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR). Today, its product merchandising applications are trusted by a staggering 30,000 merchants, including an elite cohort of over 2,500 stores operating on the enterprise-grade Shopify Plus tier.
By bringing AppMaker into the fold, StarApps is absorbing a proven technological powerhouse. AppMaker currently powers native mobile applications for more than 200 enterprise brands, which collectively process over $100 million in annual gross merchandise value (GMV) through their mobile storefronts. For the thousands of Shopify Plus merchants already relying on StarApps, investing in native mobile applications represents the next logical step to scale their businesses.
The numbers behind native mobile apps reveal why they are becoming indispensable for modern e-commerce. Brands utilizing AppMaker have reported conversion rates up to three times higher than average, a 28% revenue surge within their first year, and a fivefold increase in customer lifetime value (LTV). Crucially, the platform has also enabled companies to reduce their advertising spend by up to 30%.
“Mobile apps are the most powerful retention channel a brand can own,” stated Saleeh K, Founder of AppMaker. He noted that their clients routinely see their highest repeat purchase rates and strongest loyalty metrics driven directly through their apps. “Joining forces with StarApps allows us to bring this impact to many more brands, at scale,” he added.

Breaking the chains of rigid SaaS architecture
Historically, scaling an e-commerce brand into the mobile app space came with a frustrating dilemma. Merchants were often forced to choose between adopting rigid, templated products with severely limited flexibility, or funding prohibitively expensive custom application builds.
AppMaker eliminates this industry bottleneck through its defining feature: an open architecture model. Instead of locking brands into a predetermined and inflexible product roadmap, the platform enables a merchant’s internal tech team—or their Shopify development partners—to build highly customized features directly on top of the underlying architecture. This fundamentally shifts the operational dynamic, meaning businesses no longer have to endure long wait times in an external provider’s queue every time they need a bespoke feature rolled out.
Shashank Agrawal, Founder of StarApps, explained the vision driving the buyout. “We’ve spent years helping merchants improve how customers shop online,” Agrawal noted. “The next step was helping brands nurture stronger relationships after that first purchase.” He praised AppMaker as an exceptional enterprise platform, adding that it is “the perfect fit for what we’re trying to achieve on an enterprise level” by allowing them to support merchants across a much broader spectrum of the customer journey.
Following the acquisition, AppMaker will maintain uninterrupted support for its current client base and partners, now heavily reinforced by StarApps’ vast scale and distribution capabilities within Shopify. Together, the newly unified entity aims to engineer advanced software architectures that will empower e-commerce brands to deliver faster, highly personalized, and high-converting shopping experiences that seamlessly bridge the gap between web and mobile.
